What is a commercial gas certificate and does my business need one?
A commercial gas certificate – formally known as a Gas Safety Record – is a document issued by a Gas Safe registered engineer confirming that the gas appliances, pipework, and flues in a commercial premises have been inspected and found to be safe. Commercial landlords and business owners have a legal duty under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 to ensure that all gas appliances and pipework in their premises are maintained in a safe condition and inspected annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Any business premises with gas appliances – including boilers, commercial catering equipment, and gas fires — requires an annual commercial gas certificate.
How often does a commercial gas certificate need to be renewed?
Commercial gas safety certificates must be renewed annually. The inspection must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer each year, and a new certificate issued. Unlike domestic gas safety records, which are sometimes associated with specific tenancy arrangements, the requirement for commercial premises applies continuously and is the responsibility of the business owner or commercial landlord. What does a commercial gas safety inspection involve?
During a commercial gas safety inspection, our Gas Safe registered engineers carry out a thorough assessment of all gas appliances, pipework, and flues on the premises. This includes checking that all gas appliances are operating safely and correctly; inspecting pipework for signs of corrosion, damage, or improper installation; checking all flues and ventilation to ensure safe combustion and exhaust of gases; testing for gas tightness; and checking that safety devices are functioning correctly. On completion, we issue a Gas Safety Record documenting the findings and any remedial action required.
What happens if a fault is found during a commercial gas inspection?
If our engineers identify a fault or unsafe condition during the inspection, we will explain the issue clearly and advise on the remedial work required. Where a fault poses an immediate risk to safety, the affected appliance or supply may need to be isolated until the issue is resolved. We can carry out most remedial work directly following the inspection, minimising disruption to your business. A new certificate is issued once all identified issues have been resolved and the installation is confirmed as safe.
